The Self-portrait

The self-portrait is a way to express oneself, to be remembered, and an artistic exploration. It is creating something of you with viewers in mind. Portraiture began with the Egyptians, Greeks, and the Romans. At an age preoccupied with "personal salvation and self-scrutiny". The first photographic self-portrait ever made was in 1839, by Robert Cornelius.

Today is the "age of the selfie". The difference, self-portraits are created as an art form, where the selfie is a depiction of a moment, a photo practice. In my mind, both serve an important purpose, to be seen. An aching to be ackowledged by others, made relevant.
